I've decided to make Inbox Dollars the first program that I review in this series because it is my favorite. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to save some money or earn a few dollars from your time online.

Before I get into the details on this program, let's be clear: NONE of these programs are going to make you get rich quick, or replace any sustainable income. Any program that suggests it can do that is probably not going to earn a good review from me (or even get the chance to be reviewed). A good reward program is NOT intended to make you quit your day job or put big bucks in your bank account. What a good reward program does, is find ways to reduce the cost of things you already spend money on and give something back to you in exchange for using their program and spending your valuable time with them instead of doing something else on the internet... like reading this blog!  A good reward program is one that lets you cash out quick and easy, with a few bucks or gift card balances to spend.

Now that we're on the same page, let's get back to Inbox Dollars.  One of the reasons that I love this rewards program so much, is because of its versatility. Unlike some programs, it offers a wide variety of activities that you can earn from. Let's break down a few of them:

  • Surveys - This is a pretty standard feature for online rewards programs. Complete surveys on a variety of topics; get paid in rewards (in this case, cash rewards ranging from about 25 cents to $1.50). This is comparable to surveys taken through any rewards program. It can be a great way to get your rewards up, but also can be very time consuming and frustrating when you don't qualify even though you've already spent a good deal of time answering all of their qualifying questions.
    • Pros: Even when you get disqualified for a survey (or when a survey has already timed out), you get a spin on "Billy's Spin & Win" - a wheel where you can win cash rewards or "Scratch & Win progress" (more on that later!)

  • Offers - Also common to most online rewards programs, Inbox Dollars has a bunch of "offers" that you can complete for rewards. These can range anywhere from 10 cents to over $100. Basically, they are links to Inbox Dollars' affiliate partners that want you to sign up for their sites or buy something. As expected, the easy and free offers have the lowest rewards (and I tend to stay away from these because they can be a bit spammy and I don't know if they are all that safe).
    • Pros: If you already plan on doing something (like signing up for Hulu), use the Inbox Dollars link to do so! You'll get $8 in rewards for using their link to join Hulu, and $100+ if you want to become a driver for Uber or Lyft

  • TV - Inbox Dollars claims you can earn rewards by watching TV - but don't get too excited! No, they won't pay you to watch the latest Walking Dead (or to binge Timeless on Hulu, #SaveTimeless). It's more like a series of YouTube-style videos, with tons of ads in between. So in reality, they are paying you to watch ads. The reward for this is Scratch & Win Progress (again, more on that later).
    • Pros: Can be done passively - let the videos run in the background while you're online doing something in another tab, or simply away from the computer/phone cooking dinner or cleaning house. Just remember to check in every few minutes to tell it you're still watching or to use up your Scratch & Win.
  • Search - That's right; you can get paid just to search the internet. Use the Inbox Dollars search engine instead of Google (or whatever you usually use) and earn Scratch & Win Progress.
  • Coupons - One great feature of Inbox Dollars; it has great grocery coupons you can print (in association with Coupons.com) which helps you save money at the grocery store - but ALSO after you redeem the coupons, you get $.10 in rewards for each one. This can add up, for using coupons to buy things you were already going to buy.
  • Paid Email - Several times a day, Inbox Dollars will send you emails. (So be sure to use your junk email - or even a dedicated one - when signing up!) However, they will PAY you (one cent) for opening each of these emails. Doesn't sound like much, but it really adds up! I wait until I have a bunch, then spend a minute going through each of them. Earn rewards without even signing into the app or site.
  • Arcade - My new favorite feature on Inbox Dollars; arcade games. Simple little internet games like solitaire, a candy swap game, and a bubble shooter game. Why is this exciting? Because you get PAID to play them (with Scratch & Win progress). And NO, it doesn't show you ads like you would expect. Just play the games (like you would be wasting time on anyways) and get paid.
    • Cons: It tends to be a bit laggy at times. I'm not sure if this is because of my phone, or because it is a new program and they are still working out the bugs.
    • Pros: Passive, and fills up the Scratch & Win bar very quickly.

  • Scratch & Win - As I've mentioned above, many of the activities pay you with Scratch & Win Progress. So here's how that works: Every time you complete a Scratch & Win activity (playing games, watching videos, searching the web, etc) your Scratch & Win bar goes up. It has three levels, with each level taking longer to fill.

You can stop at the first, or wait until you fill the middle or top tear levels. When you are ready to redeem, you get to scratch off a ticket. You win anywhere from a few cents, up to $100 on each ticket (with higher prizes being on the top tear). The great thing is you can do this over and over and over and over... meaning you are always getting SOMETHING in return for all of the activities that you complete with Inbox Dollars. (I, for example, can scratch the middle ticket every 2-3 games of solitaire)

There are even more ways you can earn cash rewards with InboxDollars besides the ones I've listed above, but these are the main ones I have tested out.

Summary:

My Favorite Features:
  • Arcade
  • Coupons
  • Paid Email
Biggest Pros:
  • Variety of ways to earn
  • Many passive options
  • Put in as little or as much time and effort as you like
  • Rewards in cold hard cash, not points for gift cards
Biggest Cons:
  • TV option is misleading (but ok once you understand what it is)
  • The App and website seem to offer slightly different options; sometimes it takes some digging to find exactly what you're looking for.
  • New Arcade feature is a bit buggy, but I am confident they are working on it.

My Frequency of Use:  Daily
