This Is Us - Who is The Mother of Kevin's Child??? #BabyMamaList

The NBC drama This Is Us has left us with plenty of mysteries to ponder during its three and a half seasons we have seen so far.  The show's ability to keep us guessing, and then switch things up just as soon as we think we have figured it out, has been what has drawn many fans to the series since the big twist at the end of the pilot episode that the events we have been watching are playing out at different points in time.


The latest mystery is WHO IS KEVIN MARRYING AND HAVING A BABY WITH??



This first came into question at the end of season 3. During a flash forward or 10 or more years (the day we've been told will be the series' end that we have been seeing little bits and pieces of ever since Kate and Toby's wedding), we meet a blonde tween boy. We are told that Kevin is this boy's father.



We were all happy to spend the offseason theorizing over who could be the mother of that boy. It didn't seem likely that it was Zoe, Beth's cousin that Kevin had just broken up with, since the boy didn't look to be mixed race and the reason they had broken up was that Zoe doesn't want to have kids. When the season 4 teasers came out, introducing us to a whole slew of new actors playing new characters we haven't seen before, an early favorite choice became the "military woman" seen being played by House and Once Upon a Time alum Jennifer Morrison (@jenmorrisonlive).

During the first half of season 4, we have come to learn that Morrison is playing Cassidy, a just-back-from-deployment mom who is currently estranged from her husband due to mistakes that she has made.  Therefore, we spent the entire first half of the season waiting to find out if Kevin and Cassidy would end up together.  While they did bond and become very good friends while Kevin was looking after his Uncle Nicky, and they did end up having sex, in the end Cassidy has decided to try and make things work with her estranged husband and says goodbye to Kevin.  (Regardless if Cassidy and Kevin end up dating or not, I sure hope this isn't the last we see of her!)

Our very last tease at the end of the Thanksgiving mid-season finale, we get reminded that this question is still out there - but we don't get any answers! We have learned that 9 months from now, on August 31st, 2020, The Big 3's 40th birthday, Kevin has a pregnant fiance. We, of course, didn't get to see WHO she is, because she was in another room laying down. So now we have not one but TWO future days we are trying to piece together. Luckily, this one is not so far off, as this scene should play on in present-day-time for the Season 5 premiere in Fall of 2020.  The season premiers always take place on The Big Threes big day!


Kevin did announce at the Pearson family Thanksgiving that he plans to be married and have a child by the time he is 40.  Since Randall reminded him that this is only 9 months away, engaged and pregnant is probably about as close as he would get to this proclamation becoming a reality. Is Kevin acting impulsively and proposing to someone he just met because of a mid-life crisis? Or has he truly found happiness?  While another half a season has gone by, we still aren't *really* any closer to knowing who Kevin's mystery baby mama is.  Here are ALL of the possibilities I have been able to come up with.  Comment with any that I missed!!!




Possibility 1) His ex-wife Sophie

Third times a charm? It's very possible he could be remarrying his ex-wife. She has been the love of his life since they were what, 9? They've parted ways more times than I can keep track of, so it would not be out of character for them to try again.

Possibility 2) Cassidy

It seems to line up perfectly. Why else would they have introduced her and spent so much time developing her character? Just to throw us off?

She could even already be pregnant from the time they slept together in the RV, and end up giving birth on that very day we are seeing at the cabin! It would be great to add yet another birthday to August 31st - which is already the birthday of Kevin, Kate, Randall, and Jack. After all, we were originally misled to believe this series was just that - about a whole bunch of people who share a birthday. My only hesitation in this theory is that it seems too easy. Or do they just want is to dismiss it because it seems to easy, the twist being that there is no twist?

Possibility 3) - Kate's friend Madison.

They seem to have been actually getting alone the last few times we saw them together. And, it's not like Kevin hasn't fallen for his twin's bestie before! This was another fan-favorite theory between season 3 and 4, however, with Kevin having spent the majority of this season in Pennsylvania instead of cozying up to Madison in LA, I'm a bit skeptical. But it is still totally possible.

Possibility 4) Someone we don't know yet. With all this build-up it feels like it SHOULD be someone we know. Honestly, I'll be disappointed if they are just like - surprise! Here's someone else you've never seen before! - But, stranger things have happened. Maybe it's someone we - and Kevin - haven't even met yet. He does seem to be in a rush (and really good at making bad decisions).

Possibility 5) Zoe While we've been looking for a white, probably blonde mama-to-be since first seeing what Kevin's future son looks like, who's to say that the boy is THIS child? Zoe has a change of heart, they decided to get back together and get pregnant. It would make the engagement a little less impulsive if it's someone we already saw him dating for a year. Then later, they end up adopting the blonde boy (or he has him with someone else).

Possibility 6) This is my craziest and most unlikely idea - but what about Toby's ex-wife Josie? It could explain why he is apprehensive about going to Kevin's to see Rebecca in the future!

Also noteworthy to this discussion:

The 40th birthday brings everyone to the Pearson cabin in PA. We know Randall isn't invited. Everyone we saw in this scene currently lives in LA. Therefore, it only makes sense to have this party in PA if someone lives there. Without Randall in the equation, it could be for the benefit of Nicky. However, it seems unlikely for everyone to pack up and go across the country for a party just to invite Nicky - couldn't they fly him to LA if they wanted him there that bad? (But with the budget this family appears to have for air-fare, anything is possible!)

The most likely reason the party is at the cabin is that at least one of them is living on the East Coast. We know that on that day, Rebecca (and Miguel???) still live in LA, as per her ID the police escort was looking at. Since Rebecca only moved to LA to help Kate with baby Jack, it makes sense to follow that they are still residing in LA also. That leaves Kevin, who has already said he enjoyed his time in the small PA town where Nicky lives. Perhaps he doesn't go back to LA. If Kevin stays close to Nicky, it would definitely inflate the theory that his fiance is Cassidy. A reunion with Sophie would also be a possibility since she lives on the East coast.
In the far future, Kevin and his family live on the East Coast, as Beth drives there from her Philly dance studio.
